JUILLIARD MUSIC SPECIALIST MR BRIAN DRYE VISITED BSB SANLITUN
BSB Sanlitun was delighted to be able to host the amazing Juilliard Music Specialist, Mr Brian Drye.
Mr Drye, a creative teaching artist, spent two days with our Performing Arts team observing classes, delivering demo lessons, and carrying out activities for our students. An instrumental force at demonstrating how Juilliard approaches music in schools.
Mr Drye also used his teaching skills and trombone while hosting three interactive and engaging workshops for our parents, staff, and Upper Primary students.
MINIBEASTS
BY LIZZA ZHOU
RECEPTION CLASS TEACHER
Can you wriggle like a worm? Can you fly like a butterfly? Can you crawl like a spider? We can do all of these things in Reception! The children have gotten their hands dirty, digging around for minibeasts, and learning about these interesting little critters.
Through art, stories, movement and sharing what we already know, the children have enjoyed this exploratory and hands on topic.
The children have even had a go at writing a sentence about their favourite minibeast. They have learned about what makes a minibeast special and why they are so important for our environment.
POLAR BEARS
BY POPPY THOMPSON
YEAR 1 CLASS TEACHER
What a great start to the new term Year 1 have had. We have started our topic of Polar Bears which the children have loved and have been learning more and more about!
They started off by learning about what they eat, what they can do and what they have. Using these facts they learnt, they then made their own fact file about Polar Bears. We have also been talking about the ice melting due to climate change and the children thought of ways in which they could help save the Polar Bears environment.
They have also been very busy making their own dioramas of an Artic scene. Using different materials, paint or paper, they have designed the inside and then added extra parts for the ice, mountains or water. The children made their own playdough polar bears to put into their scene and presented them to their friends, describing what they had made.
We have just started our story of The Lonely Polar Bear, where we will make our own comic strips and the children will be introduced to onomatopoeias. We are looking forward to seeing the comic strips develop!
A SWEET TREAT
BY KERRY BARNARD
YEAR 4 CLASS TEACHER
Thanks to their hard work, determination and enthusiasm towards their learning, Storks earnt themselves a trip over to the cookery room as their Marble reward.
Applying their Design Technology, Maths and English skills, Storks followed a set of instructions to accurately weigh and measure the ingredients to make gingerbread cookies.
They displayed great collaboration as they got their hands dirty mixing the ingredients together, before carefully rolling out the dough and cutting out their winter themed cookies. The children then had to endure an agonising wait as they baked in the oven!
'We had lots of fun making the cookies, the best bit was cutting out our shapes. They tasted sweet and delicious.'
Maryam, Year 4 Storks.
'They were very good! I loved making the cookies, especially the dough and maxing it together with my hands.'
Harry, Year 4 Storks.
DODGE BALL UNIT
BY FRANK HAN
PE TEACHER
This week the children have been practising different dodge ball techniques of dodging, throwing and catching. Dodge ball is one of the most popular units in the school’s teaching curriculum. In this unit, children are encouraged to be brave and be competitive.
We first started off with the practice of throwing by putting different players in one team and letting them throw the ball to each other. It is apparent that most of the children have a natural interest in shooting with a target and all they need to know is when they play in a real game, they need to throw straight and fast.
Then we put everybody into 2 different teams to make an attacking team and a defensive team. The attacking team need to throw the ball together to hit players in the defensive team while the defensive team need to either block the ball or dodge the ball - with this practice, the children become more brave and they don’t fear the balls any more.
Finally, for the dodging practice, the teacher throws the ball to the students, and they must dodge it. This was the most difficult part of the unit because for some of them, it was a bit hard to make the right move to dodge; but with proper encouragement all of them made a great progress.
In my opinion, dodge ball is one of the best sports for children in primary school because it is safe and fun and children can improve their strengths and speed while playing and all of them can achieve a notable result.
